Vacancy for Senior Academic Staff “Law and sustainability”

(ref. ZAP-2020-244)

Employment percentage: Full-time
Location: Kortrijk
Faculty of Law, Kulak Kortrijk Campus
Apply up to and including: Monday, March 1, 2021

The subfaculty of Law of the KU Leuven campus Kulak Kortrijk invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Senior Academic Staff in the field of Law and Sustainability. The assignment consists of teaching in an academic context, scientific research and additional duties of an academic nature, along with those to the wider society. The subfaculty of Law of the KU Leuven campus Kulak Kortrijk is a dynamic unit that teaches law in the first two years of the bachelor's programme. The scientific research focuses mainly on private and economic law, with research lines on property law, contract law, consumer law, family law and legal history. The team consists of five professors and about ten full-time and part-time employees who work in Kortrijk.

Duties

Research

The assignment is comprised of research into an adequate legal framework to support sustainable development, contracts, consumption and production. This research may include both the public law framework (e.g. the greening of public procurement, modern environmental law and planning instruments, more extensive product standardisation) and the private law framework (e.g. sustainable land use, sustainability obligations in corporate law, legal aspects of circular economy, new financing models) and, above all, the interaction between the two domains. The candidate's research programme is intended to tie in with existing research at the Kulak campus.
The candidate is expected - in collaboration with the other researchers at the Kulak campus and the research units involved at the Leuven faculty - to develop an international and competitive research programme "Law and Sustainability" and to pursue excellent scientific results. This research intersects with non-legal disciplines. The candidate is therefore also expected to collaborate extensively with other faculties where sustainability research is carried out.
The candidate is expected to add a proposal for a medium-term research programme to her/his application file.

Education

The candidate will be involved in teaching at the Kulak campus and may also be required to teach at the Leuven campus. The candidate contributes to the interactive and innovative education on which the Kulak campus focuses. It is expected of the candidate that her/his teaching meets the requirements concerning the standard, orientation and academic character demanded of academic programmes of study. The commitment of the candidate to the quality of the academic program as a whole, is considered self-evident.

Service

The candidate is expected to have a very active presence on the Kulak campus. The candidate is willing to develop networks with the local legal professions and with regional actors who focus on the field of sustainability. She/he will be involved in the faculty policy of post-graduate education. The candidate is expected to be willing to contribute to the services the university provides to the community, and that she/he is also willing, in the long term, to accept policy functions in the faculty and subfaculty. The candidate will also be at the disposal of the government, society and the media to provide scientific services and information.

Profile

The candidate must hold a doctoral degree of Law. She/he has a strong research file, with clear indications of growth potential. The candidate is prepared to acquaint herself/himself with new legal topics if necessary.

The candidate preferably has experience with teaching in an academic context and possesses demonstrable didactic skills. Experience in research-based education is an asset.

The official administrative and teaching language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to teach in Dutch after three years.

The candidate has the social and executive skills that are necessary to work amicably and flexibly in the teams within the faculty, the subfaculty and the research unit.

Offer

We offer you a dynamic and international research environment. The subfaculty of Law campus Kulak Kortrijk is part of the Faculty of Law. The Faculty has a large national and international network, which is comprised of both academics and legal professionals, at its disposal.

Depending on your qualifications, you will be appointed in one of the grades of senior academic staff (tenure track with an evaluation after five years / assistant professor, associate professor or professor).

KU Leuven pursues a policy of equal opportunity and diversity.
