The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in
research and teaching. At the beginning of 2019, the „Africa Multiple“ Cluster of Excellence (EXC 2052) will commence
operations with funding from the Excellence Strategy of Germany‘s federal and state governments. The aim of the cluster is
to reconfigure African studies at both the conceptual and the structural levels. The cluster is conceived as a transformative
space for the systematic study of African and African diasporic ways of life, enabling new forms of inter- and transdisciplinary
cooperation.
The new position within the cluster need to be filled by January 1st, 2019 or soon thereafter. Successful applicants will
carry out a wide variety of activities in a dynamic and motivated team focusing on a strategically important field of work.
Director, Office of
Gender & Diversity (E 13, TV-L)
The Office of Gender & Diversity operates under the leadership of the Chairperson of the
Cluster of Excellence and the Vice Dean of Early Career and Equal Opportunity. The
new director of the office will have the following responsibilities:
- cooperation and participation in the cluster‘s decision-making bodies;
- promotion and enforcement of diversity and comprehensive equality in all academic staff
decisions in the Cluster of Excellence;
- providing support for the members of the Cluster of Excellence in questions of discrimination
prevention and equality, dual career support, and the compatibility of family and career (in
coordination with existing university institutions);
- coordination of measures in the areas of mentoring, coaching, gender monitoring, gender
awareness, racism, and religious diversity;
- organization of continuing education measures and workshops for members of the Cluster
of Excellence including research partners in Africa;
- development and implementation of measures to address intersectionality issues in the
cluster‘s research projects;
- cooperation with the existing network Gender, Queer, Intersectionality and Diversity
(GeQuInDi) at the University of Bayreuth.
We welcome applications from candidates with the following profile:
- a university degree and doctoral degree in a subject in the Humanities, Social Sciences, or
Cultural Studies;
- a profile in the field of intersectionality research (gender, diversity, postcolonial studies),
preferably relating to Africa and/or African diasporas;
- an excellent command of German and English;
- if possible, relevant professional and/or research experience as well as other foreign
language skills.
The incumbent will be given the opportunity to develop his or her own research project in the
aforementioned field and to apply for funding in the scope of the Cluster of Excellence. In
addition to the usual documents, applicants are requested to submit a concept paper of up to
three pages outlining ideas for strengthening gender equality and diversity in human resources
development and research.
If the personal and collectively agreed conditions are met, the salary will fall into the pay grade
E 13 TV-L. The place of employment is Bayreuth. The successful applicant will initially be hired
for a period of four years. An extension is possible if the activities are successful and if the
requirements of WissZeitVG are met.
