Doctoral Candidates (f/m) in the area of prospective technology assessment

Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) is looking for
Doctoral Candidate(s) (m/w) in the area of
prospective technology assessment
Contemporary environmental and social problems need systemic solutions that combine
technology development with business models, a supportive legal framework, uptake
by citizens and businesses, and mitigation of environmental impacts. Technologies
such as additive manufacturing, are expected to become part of key systemic solutions
to pending sustainability challenges. Their potential side-effects, costs, and ultimate
contribution levels are presently not known, however.
The research project PROSET (PROSpective assessment of Emerging Technologies)
funded by the Eva-Mayr-Stihl Foundation aims to close this gap in knowledge by combining
the assessment of technology development with systems analysis such as life
cycle assessment (LCA) or material flow analysis (MFA). Here, the information gained
from LCA screening of the life phases of representative products and emerging manufacturing
technologies supports the generation of scenarios for deployment of these
technologies. Another branch of research will deal with the assessment of large-scale
consequences of sustainable manufacturing technology rollout for the German industrial
As part of PROSET, the doctoral candidate investigates technical aspects of additive
manufacturing. The focus is on the generation of an accurate framework describing the
relevant characteristics of these technologies including future potential and challenges.
Design of accurate models for the additive manufacturing process, in particular for
the introduction of large scale, commercial product lines.
Quantification of material flows, energy flows and emissions in additive manufacturing.
Evaluation of the sustainability potential of additive manufacturing technologies.
This includes the investigation of closed-loop flows (recycling), management of waste
flows, etc. as well as potential weight savings compared to conventional products/
Identification of expected future developments in additive manufacturing and the
development of strategies for their assessment (future developments might include.
recycling pathways of support nodes, multi-headed laser process, numerical optimization
of components, etc.).
In cooperation with industry partners, exemplary case studies for future developments
are selected and investigated using the developed strategies.
Participation in preparation and execution of university courses.
Expected profile of candidate‘s qualification:
MSc degree in engineering sciences or Physics.
Experience with higher programming languages is preferred (C, Python, or Matlab).
The candidate needs to display genuine interest in the scientific assessment of sustainable
development strategies and in the development of computational infrastructure
for cumulative research (collaboration in teams, version management, software

Very good knowledge of English is required, knowledge of German is an advantage.
