With approximately 7,500 employees, the University Medical Center of the
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany) is one of the largest
employers in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Our center treats more
than 300,000 patients every year and is also a prominent institution for
research and education. As a maximum care hospital, we offer numerous
opportunities for personal and professional development.
We have an immediate opening for a
Full Professor for Physiological
Chemistry / Neurobiology
successor to Univ.-Prof. Dr. Benedikt Berninger
in accordance with salary grade W2 of the State Renumeration
Act (Landesbesoldungsgesetz), for 6 years with tenure track
We are looking for an internationally renowned researcher for neurobiological
and/or neuroimmunological topics who will represent the area of physiological
chemistry in research, teaching and further academic education. The candidate
should strengthen the Institute of Physiological Chemistry by substantially
contributing to the neurobiological and/or neuroimmunological research at
the University Medical Center Mainz, as well as through intensive commitment
to preclinical training for medical students.
The vacant position entails the research of current translational issues in
neurobiology and/or neuroimmunology – such as cell differentiation, in
vitro systems (i.e. organoids), behavior or neurological diseases – through
(epi) genetic, optogenetic, molecular or cellular methods. In addition to a
relevant doctorate, the candidate‘s excellence in research should be proven
through nationally and internationally visible publications. Due to the fact that
the desired research includes close collaboration with different research
structures of the University Medical Center (such as the Focus Program
Translational Neurosciences, the Research Center for Immunotherapy and
the German Resilience Center), with regional networks (such as the Rhine-
Main Neuroscience Network), as well as with locally represented collaborative
research centers (CRC 1080, CRC 1193, CRC/TR 128), a high level of network
competence and cooperation, as well as the ability to conduct interdisciplinary
research is required. Because the holder of this position will actively pursue
the establishment of new research infrastructures and/or group funding
instruments, competence in generating third-party funds proven by high-quality
acquisitions is required.
The professorship requires comprehensive participation in the preclinical
teaching of medical students in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology and
molecular biology. Additionally, participation in the further development of
preclinical teaching concepts is expected. In this respect, demonstrable
teaching competence as well as a habilitation or comparable experience
in accordance with § 49 para. 1 no. 4 a) of the Higher Education Act are
required. Ensuring further academic training is one of the duties of the
future holder of this position.
All remaining conditions for employment are defined in § 49 of the German
Higher Education Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The position constitutes a private law employment relationship to the University
Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The State of
Rhineland-Palatinate, the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the
University Medical Center pursue a concept of intensive support for students
and expect instructors to maintain a high presence. The University Medical
Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz strives to increase the
share of women in scientific managerial positions and therefore invites female
scientists, in particular, to apply for the position. Disabled applicants with
appropriate qualifications will be favored.
Please send your application with the usual documents (CV, degree and
other certificates) in German or English, including proof of previous teaching
experience, acquisition of external funding and publications to the
