The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) seeks two qualified candidates to serve as
Junior Researchers (PhD students)
in Development Economics and Environmental
Economics (75% of FTE)
for a three (3) year, fixed term, renewable appointment for its research areas
"Poverty Reduction, Equity and Development" (PRED) and "The Environment and Natural Resources".
As part of the team, they will work in close collaboration with agricultural economists, environmental economists and
development economists of the IfW and Kiel University in a multidisciplinary research project geared towards the
identification of politically feasible interventions for sustainable agricultural development in developing and
industrialized countries. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research
and lasts over 3 years.

interconnectedness of factors influencing this process by evaluating international and national aspects of environmental

The successful candidates will be part of a project team with several post-doctoral researchers. At the IfW, the successful
candidate will join the well-established research areas "The Environment and Natural Resources" and "Poverty Reduction, Equity
and Development" with prominent research partners and a steady flow of high-quality publications. Being internationally renowned
in research and policy consulting, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy provides excellent support to potential candidates
who are interested in developing their career in research and policy consulting.
The successful candidate is expected to pursue a PhD degree in development economics, environmental economics or in a closely
related field. Kiel University runs a well-established PhD program in quantitative economics
(https://www.quantitative-economics.uni-kiel.de/en) that junior researchers at the IfW may join.
Candidates should hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree or equivalent in economics or in a closely related field
(e.g. quantitative social sciences, agricultural economics, or econometrics). They should be familiar with relevant empirical
methods and possess an excellent academic record. Prior knowledge of CGE modeling, including the software GAMS would be an
advantage. The working language of the project is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge
of German would be useful, but is not essential.
The position will be based in Kiel and is initially funded for three years at 75% of full-time equivalent, starting on 1 April
2017; we may negotiate an earlier or later start date. We expect to be able to extend the contract to allow the successful
candidate to complete her/his PhD in a timely manner. The salary will be based on the German public sector pay scale at grade EG 13 TV L.
