Can we descripe the governing principles behind chemical and materials functionality on the level of individual atoms and active sites?
If so, one could take the step from the description of properties to gaining influence over these. Our research team has an outstanding record on identifying elemental steps that govern rate and selectivity in molecular processes that stand behind the harvesting and conversion of light into electronic excitations and energy storage. Closely related are the fundamentals that make phase transition and switching processes more efficient.
Resonant X-ray matter interaction is the tool to break down these complex processes into the elemental steps on the level of individual atoms, often focussing on the active sites and their temporal evolution. The international Synchrotron Radiation Facility BESSY II in combination with short pulse lasers in Berlin is thus our home-base with vivid and strong international collaborations to the US and within Europe for example at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser.
You have the choice between two topics:
What limits rate and efficiency of selected molecular processes important in energy conversion and storage?
What makes switching processes and phase transitions in functional materials more efficient?
Conduct X-ray spectroscopic investigations in a strong, international team of expert scientists and students.
Analyze data, develop in close exchange with our theoretical partners first principle models and prepare publications and presentations. Excellent individuals will be given the opportunity to continue towards a PhD after the Masters thesis.
Passion for excellence in basic science with the ability and willingness to focus on governing principles derived from physics and physical chemistry in close exchange between experimental X-ray investigations and theoretical modelling.
Fascination to work with high-performance instruments at large scale X-ray facilities in combination with short pulse lasers.
Be open minded with a high motivation to work in a team at the frontier of physics and physical chemistry in an internationaly competitive setting.
Ability to communicate in german and english fluently.
Fundamental science questions approached by cutting edge X-ray methods.
International and scientifically broad environment.
