The department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering hosts nine
research subjects, including the subject of Signal Processing. Current research in signal
processing takes place in the areas of ultrasound measurement technology and flexible
wireless communication, both in close cooperation with industry. To strengthen our
research in the field of flexible wireless communication, we are looking for a PhD
Massive use of sensors and actuators, along with their integration in new kinds of
cyber-physical systems, will contribute to a new emerging industrial era. In an
increasing number of harsh industrial environments, use of wires to connect sensors is
not obvious and comes with challenges related not only to mechanical and thermal
properties, but also related to questions about their placement and retrofitting.
Meanwhile, radio communication is often not an alternative. Radio wave propagation
through large volumes of steel, machinery, rock, liquids or concrete is limited; radio
interference and associated regulations may not allow the use of spectrum, limit levels
of transmitted radio power, or even prohibit the use of radio altogether.
This project, bridging the research fields of digital communications and ultrasound
measurement technology, explores the fundamental possibilities and limitations of
ultrasound communication as an alternative means to wirelessly connect IoT devices
that are deeply embedded in or tied to solid bodies. In particular, we will explore the
intriguing idea of simultaneous communication with a massive number of distributed
sensors and actuators embedded in a single solid body, with the aid of large transducer
