The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.

The Center of Excellence "QuSpin" announces Phd and Post doctor/Researcher positions

Several PhD positions and postdoctoral/researcher positions are available at the Center of Excellence QuSpin (Center for Quantum Spintronics) which is part of the Department of Physics, NTNU. QuSpin carries out research in theoretical as well as experimental fields, and often across conventional boundaries between subfields. Presently, there are theoretical and experimental positions available. The candidates will join and become part of an excellent research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments.

The PhD positions have a duration of three years with the possibility of up to 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. The duration of the postdoc/researcher positions is nominally 2 years, but other arrangements can become possible.

About the center and department of Physics
The Center of Excellence QuSpin is funded by the Research Council of Norway. QuSpin is managed by a Center Director and has four principal investigators. See https://www.ntnu.edu/quspin

The vision of the center is to trigger a revolution in low-power information and communication technologies in an energy-efficient society. QuSpin‘s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceptually different from those existing today.

The Center has currently 15 PhD students and 9 postdoctoral researchers working on various aspects of low-dissipation spintronics. Currently the Department of Physics has 29 professors and 10 associate professors. Research conducted at the Department spans a broad spectrum of natural sciences and technology, which in turn allows us to offer an education providing a solid basis for future careers. The institute makes a special effort to increase the awareness and understanding of the importance and impact of physics in our society. See https://www.ntnu.edu/physics

Job description
QuSpin has both theoretical and experimental activities. The candidates for these positions will develop theoretical models and/or conduct experimental measurements related to transport of spin and other degrees of freedom in magnetic insulators, topological insulators, and superconductors.

The aim is to develop a new or improved understanding of spin transport and spin dynamics in novel nano-structured hybrid systems. Such an understanding can assist in developing new spintronics concepts where only spins flow, but no electric charges. Detailed information on our PhD programs is found at https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd

QuSpin focuses on spin-related phenomena in a) magnetic insulators, b) topological matter, and c) superconductors. In this announcement, we invite applicants for PhD positions with a focus on b) topological matter (theory), c) superconductors (theory), or (iii) experimental activities in systems related to or combining a), b) or c). The candidate should specify which of these topics he or she would prefer to work on during the PhD thesis.

For the postdoctoral/researcher positions, we ask that the candidates give a detailed description in their application concerning which research topic a), b) or c) they will contribute to in QuSpin, and how their scientific background enables them to make a valuable contribution, theoretically, experimentally, or both. An ability to contribute to more than one activity/topic [a), b) or c)] within QuSpin should be specified and will be seen as an advantage.

Qualifications
The applicant for the PhD positions must have an MSc (or equivalent) in physics or nanotechnology or a closely related field. For the theory positions, we require a solid background in condensed matter theory or related theoretical areas in physics or nanotechnology. For the experimental positions, the requirements are similar in experimental physics. He/she has to demonstrate good basic knowledge in solid state physics and quantum physics. It is an advantage if the candidate can document a background that is particularly relevant for ongoing research projects at QuSpin. We will not consider candidates that already have a PhD degree for the PhD positions.

The applicant for the postdoctoral positions must have a PhD degree in condensed matter physics, and preference will be given to candidates with a scientifically documented background in quantum transport and/or spintronics.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree. http://ec.europa.eu/education/resources/diploma-supplement_en

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results of standard tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate‘s language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview.

Aspiring candidates should be strongly motivated and ambitious. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented, and actively contribute in teams. Personal skills like a positive and friendly attitude, and contributing to a sustainable social environment will also be valued.

Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows and the postdoctoral/research positions will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the PhD positions must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

NTNU‘s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

NTNU International Researcher Support (NIRS) offers counselling services for administrative staff and researchers working at or visiting NTNU. Other services offered by NIRS includes housing, dual career services, seminars, courses and social activities for the international community at NTNU. See https://www.ntnu.edu/nirs

The positions are renumerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.

For further inquiries and information, please contact QuSpin at contact@quspin.ntnu.no

The application
Applications with CV, certificates from Master and PhD, possible publications and other scientific works, copies of transcripts, copies of documentation on English language proficiency test and reference letters should be submitted.

Please, clearly mark which position you apply for, and specify preferred topic you want to work on.

Applications must be submitted electronically through this page.
Applications submitted elsewhere will not be considered.
The reference number of the position is: NV-47/18

Application deadline: April 6th 2018.
