The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy is one of the research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (MPG). As an innovative research institution with numerous international collaborations, we carry out fundamental research across a range of astronomical topics. The Division for submm/FIR Technologies supports cutting-edge research by providing innovative instrumentation for a number of experiments, among them, the operation of the word-leading submm telescope APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiments) and the high resolution spectrometer GREAT (0,5-4,7 THz) aboard the NASA-DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

For the development and operation of advanced receiver systems for these observatories the MPIfR has an immediate opening for a

Physicist, Applied Physicist, Electrical Engineer
(or equivalent qualification)

As project scientist in the Division for submm/FIR Technologies you will be responsible for leading technological developments related to instrumentation for APEX, GREAT and other projects under the guidance and in consultation with the division head. A solid understanding of the observing principles of modern submm/FIR astronomy and fundamental knowledge of the underlying detector- and antenna technologies are necessary prerequisites this position.

Specific key elements of this position are:
  • Independent development and operation of research instrumentation such as new receivers or upgrades of existing systems for a variety of observing platforms.
  • Project leadership and management, including presentation and Institute representation at national and international coordination meetings.
  • A goal-oriented, systematic and precise approach to bringing research instruments into science operation.
  • Conception and realization of designs in close cooperation with Institute scientific and technical staff members.
  • Quality assurance of system functionality and instrument performance.

Requirements for this position are:
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially with teams of scientists and technical personnel.
  • Excellent communication in English (required) and German (desirable) in written and verbal forms.
  • The ability to take part in multi-week observing campaigns at locations across the world. Work during the campaigns can be stressful and will require medical clearance to work at high altitudes (to 5100 meters) and at remote sites.

Candidates should have expert experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Fundamental knowledge in the fields of
    • High-frequency technology
    • (quasi-)optics
    • Cryogenic systems suitable for astronomical receivers
    • Reflector antennas
  • Working knowledge of
    • Computer systems
    • Electronics
    • Mechanical design
    • Control systems
  • Submm- and Terahertz technology
  • Radio astronomical receivers
  • Senior roles in international projects
