The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation within its
German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS). At the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht jointly operates the
High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS, P07), the Imaging Beamline (IBL, P05) and the Nanofocus Endstation of the Micro and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering
Beamline (MINAXS, P03) along with supporting lab spaces (http://gems.hzg.de).
Recently, DESY has extended the number of beamlines at PETRA III with two extensions. DESY and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht are building a new beamline at one
of the extensions for use with white X-ray beams. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht part of the beamline will focus on engineering materials research. Among others,
experiments for residual stress analysis and spatially and time-resolved phase analysis will be offered to users.
Within this framework we are looking for a PostDoc (m/f) as instrument scientist (m/f) at the new white-beam beamline. The concrete hutches for the
beamline will be built in early 2018 and the frontend shall be completed in late 2018.
The position will initially be limited to three years with the option of an extension.
Your task will be to build and run the new beamline including sample environments and to build up a user community. You will be supported by local technicians and
the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht central technical department and work together with external partners.
Your work includes:
defining optical elements, experimental area and detectors for the beamline
designing sample environments for in-situ experiments together with external cooperation partners and in-house researchers
commissioning of the new beamline
development of software for data reduction and analysis
service for users at the beamline
acquisition of scientific collaborations
pursuit of an own scientific research project within the scope of Helmholtz programme-oriented funding
In order to be successful you definitely need experience with synchrotron beamline instrumentation and sample environments. Experience with white beam techniques will be necessary as well.
In addition, you need:
a PhD in physics or a related discipline
knowledge in materials science
experience with diffraction-based residual stress analysis, especially white beam techniques
capability of analysis of large amounts of diffraction data
programming skills in a high level computer language
good German and English language skills
