Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Machine Learning

At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Machine Learning. The position is for a fixed term of 4 years.

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. Machine learning is a special focus area of our department. We have recently founded a Center for Data Science which the machine learning research group is s central part of. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department offers state of the art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

About the project/work tasks:
All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching.The successful candidate will conduct research within the machine learning research group. The group conducts research in the core machine learning: we develop new methods and better algorithms for machine learning tools. Our main research areas are probabilistic graphical models and topological data analysis. The successful candidate will spend 25% of the working time to tasks related to teaching, outreach, profiling and recruitment of students. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research plan relates to probabilistic graphical models, topological data analysis and deep learning but excellent candidates from the other areas of machine learning will be considered as well.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within computer science or a related field. PhD students may apply if the defense of the PhD thesis is to be completed by 31.12.2019.
  • It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience from research and publication is a requirement.
  • Experience in research in machine learning is an advantage
  • A publication record with papers in top-level machine learning venues is an advantage.
  • Teaching experience is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
  • A good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage.
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution. Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

  • Salary at pay grade 59 - 65 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 3) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 515 200 - 576 100 before taxes. Further promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
