at the Faculty of Architecture and Design (100%) FoAD 2021/02
Berlin International is a university of applied sciences with a distinct international focus. All
study programs are taught in English. For the Faculty of Architecture and Design (FoAD), we are
seeking a:
Professor of Architectural Design and Theory (100%)
The Faculty of Architecture and Design currently offers an eight-semester bachelor’s program in
Architecture. To support our continuous growth, we are looking for a professor with an
international background as well as substantial academic and professional experience.
Applicants should have expertise in the current state of architecture practice and the
discipline’s discourse. All applicants are expected to have solid general knowledge in
architectural design, architectural history, and architectural theory. Applicants should
demonstrate experience in design processes from conceptualization to realization, as well as
extensive involvement with research and teaching in the fields of architectural theory and
history. Links to relevant industries and organizations as well as an interdisciplinary and
intercultural teaching background are expected.
The faculty is seeking candidates that are enthusiastic about promoting the development of
the study program. Collegiality, communication skills, and the ability to foster a positive work
environment are vital. Candidates should be able to spark students’ curiosity and enthusiasm.
Successful applicants will be expected to teach both in the bachelor’s as well as the future
master’s degree programs, and contribute to interdisciplinary courses and projects. They
should be in a position to support the development of the Architecture bachelor’s program
specifically, and the faculty in general. Professors are expected to conduct (applied) research
projects and participate in the faculty’s administration and governance.
Job requirements:
- Applicants must fulfill the requirements for professorships at universities of applied
sciences (Fachhochschulen) in accordance with the Berlin Higher Education Act, §100.
- At least 5 years of work experience out of which a minimum of 3 years must have been
gained outside the university context.
- Substantial occupational experience outside the university sector should include
project experience in all phases from conceptualization to realization.
- Extensive research related experience with a significant body of publications and
active conference participation.
- Broad teaching experience in both lecture-driven and project-based settings.
- Excellent command of the English language (teaching language).
- Intercultural awareness and competence preferably from earning university degrees
abroad or international work experience.
- A strong interest in contributing to the continuous growth of Berlin International.
- Preferably a PhD in Architecture or a related field. Alternatively, a body of research,
publications, competition entries and/or practice evidencing a professional standard
and artistic aptitude comparable to a doctoral degree. In case the candidate holds a
PhD, the degree transcript should be attached to the application.
Additional preferred skills:
- Language skills, especially in German.
- Sound knowledge of the German and Berlin higher education system.
