The Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, a European Professional School for Public Policy,
is recruiting a
Professor of International and Cyber Security
Open Rank · Funded by NXP
The Hertie School of Governance is an international teaching and research centre of excellence
that prepares students for leadership positions in government, business, and civil society. Our
international faculty, interdisciplinary in outlook, research, and teaching, offer analytically challenging
and practice-oriented courses in governance, policy analysis, management, and leadership.
As a professional school, the Hertie School faculty has a strong commitment to high-quality
teaching. Our goal is to help students grow intellectually in a professional, research-intensive
environment, characterised by public debate and engagement.
The Hertie School is recruiting a Professor of International and Cyber Security. Security in the
context of the position is understood broadly to include the body of technologies, political
strategies, regulations and compliance, standards and practices aimed to protect critical infrastructure,
networks, devices and data from attack, damage, or unauthorised access. We are
looking for a candidate with expertise in analysing international and cyber security through a
governance perspective from any of the major social sciences (e.g., political science, economics,
sociology and administrative sciences, law). We particularly welcome applications from
scholars with a strong focus on international relations, conflict or security studies. We will also
consider candidates with a strong affinity to technology including computational science and
digitalisation provided they have a background in the social sciences. Conversely, we are open
to applications from social scientists entering the field of international and cyber security, provided
they present a credible research and teaching agenda.
The position is full-time and intended to be filled at the level of full professor, but promising early
career candidates are also welcome to apply. The position is for up to six years, and may be
extended after a performance review. More junior appointments are tenure-track and subject to
mid-term and tenure reviews. The expected start date is 1 September 2018. Please note that the
position is contingent upon the availability of funds.
Applicants should hold or expect to receive a doctoral degree before the position begins. We are
interested in candidates who demonstrate the capacity for independent research at the highest
levels in their discipline, either through an established record of publication in top outlets or,
for very early-career candidates, unpublished writing samples. The Hertie School seeks faculty
with a commitment to intensive, high-quality teaching and innovative research of potential
interest to the international scholarly community and policy-makers. Candidates are expected
to show full commitment to working in an interdisciplinary, international environment with
English as the language of instruction and operation.
The successful candidate will teach primarily in the Master of International Affairs programme
and contribute to the other master’s, executive, and PhD programmes at the School. He or she
is also expected to take a role in the Hertie School’s Centre for International Security Policy
(CISP) and spearhead its research and outreach activities in the area of cyber security.
We offer an internationally competitive salary in line with the candidate’s qualifications, excellent
working conditions, a vibrant research environment, and a lively community of policy
debate in the political heart of Germany.
The Hertie School particularly encourages applications from female scholars and from candidates
with international backgrounds.
The deadline for submission of applications is 31 January 2018. The Hertie School will review
applications which include a letter of motivation and a current curriculum vitae (publication list,
degrees earned, if applicable: positions held, teaching experience, research projects, awards
received), two writing samples and, if applicable, teaching evaluations. Candidates whose PhD
was earned less than three years ago, should include three letters of recommendation from professors
who are familiar with their work. Applicants with more than three years of experience
may list contact information for three references although letters are also welcome.
Please send your application to firstname.lastname@example.org, indicating where you
