The PhD project is embedded in a collaborative project (funded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences; ÖAW) on “Impact of extreme events on the quantity and quality of groundwater in alpine regions – multiple-index application for an integrative hydro-ecological assessment”. Focus of the sub-project located at the University of Vienna, Division of Limnology, will be on the microbiological-ecological characterization of groundwaters along an altitudinal gradient following the River Mur valley with emphasis on hydrological dynamics caused by extreme weather events (heavy rain, flood, drought) and its propagation into the groundwater environments. Partners in this project are the University of Graz, the Environmental Protection Agency (Umweltbundesamt), and the Regional Government of Styria.
The Division of Limnology at the University of Vienna seeks to employ a PhD candidate experienced in the fields of aquatic microbial ecology, biogeochemistry and groundwater hydrogeology.
The position requires a MSc or diploma. The scientific working languages at the University of Vienna are English and German.
The candidate has solid experience in microbial ecology. Additional experience in the fields of biogeochemistry, aquatic ecology, hydrogeology, statistics, and ecosystem modelling is advantegous. Excellent communication skills and team work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment is obligatory.
