at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology

The Department of Evolutionary Anthropology is an international and dynamic team of 11 PIs that conducts research and provides education with a focus on Human Evolution and Archaeological Sciences. A central focus of the department is paleogenomics, with state-of-the-art infrastructure including new cleanroom wet labs and equipment. As a Senior Scientist you lead the management of our paleogenomic laboratory and contribute to research and teaching at the department.
This position (40 hours/week) is initially limited to an employment duration of 1 year with the option for a permanent position, starting at the earliest possible date.
Salary level according to collective agreement: §54 VwGr. B1 lit.b (postdoc).
The actual salary may be higher, based on your expertise and experience on the guidelines of the university of vienna.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Your tasks:
• Lead and coordinate the management and organization of our research laboratory; responsibility for analytical instruments, laboratory infrastructure and day-to-day logistics of the laboratory
• Develop and improve analytical methods in paleogenomics; conduct experiments which incorporate knowledge from the field of biological anthropology, human anatomy and molecular biology, and perform data analysis
• Teach BSc- and MSc-level classes in the area of paleogenomics and human evolution as defined by the collective agreement
• Identify the demand and give advice for selection of new instruments; conduct purchases and act as our contact point to instrument manufacturers
• Guide and advise students and researchers from undergraduate to post-doctoral level concerning laboratory operations and safety
Main tasks:
• Day-to-day organisation of the lab (including ordering consumables, and scheduling the use of lab space), as well as troubleshooting that may arise during the day-to-day functioning of the lab (which could be due to broken equipment, faulty experiment design, etc.).
• Train new members of the lab in aDNA protocols.
Technical and scientific tutoring of students for research projects, as well as helping members of the lab with aDNA experiment design.
• Searching for and collecting new samples all over the world, and maintaining communication with collaborators providing samples, as well as the coordination for the receipt and return of samples to their original institution.
• Maintaining a database of samples and sample status. Also being able to query it efficiently to update any relevant parties about specific samples.
• Managing the prioritisation of work for large projects.
• Coordinating lab use between scientists, students, technicians and visitors.
• Ensuring the safe running of the laboratory by giving all lab users the appropriate training, monitoring and storing chemicals appropriately, preparing protocols and pipelines for lab procedures, organising and monitoring protective gear, and coordinating the regular cleaning and decontamination of the labs.
Profile:
The applicant should hold a PhD in a field of physical anthropology or paleogenomics and have track record in the management of a wet lab which carries out human ancient DNA (Next Generation Sequencing) research. Additionally, the applicant must have a track record in terms of education and research in the field of biological anthropology (including geometric morphometrics). Expertise with the design, use, and maintenance of genetic and skeletal databases is also desired.
Required:
• A track record in management, mentoring and supervision of a team in all steps involved in state-of-the-art ancient DNA Next Generation Sequencing work as well as the ability to research and apply novel methods.
• A track record in establishing and enforcing work safety procedures in ancient DNA wet labs.
• Experience setting up new lab-spaces and equipment.
• A publication track record in human ancient DNA genomics including lead/co-lead of research which involves ancient DNA wet-lab experimental research.
• A publication track record in human skeletal biology/morphometrics/anatomy.
• Knowledge of collection management and databases. We have over 10,000 samples, all in various stages of processing.
• Experience managing research budgets.
• Excellent level of English, as this is the language used in the lab, and a good speaking/listening level of German is also required for some processes.
• An ability and willingness to travel to potentially challenging destinations for establishing collaborations and collecting samples.
