About the position
There is an open position as a software developer within environmental systems at NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research. The position is permanent and is affiliated to the Department for Digital Technologies
In order to further strengthen our growing group working with application within environmental systems, we are seeking a software developer.
We seek a developer that is able to investigate, identify and implement novel research ideas within environmental software as well as be involved in software development. In addition to the technical skills, the position requires that you have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts. You should enjoy being part of a team, but still be able to work independently when needed.
Duties of the position
- Creating architecture- and application designs
- Software development
- Contribute to data infrastructure work
- Proactively contribute to research ideas and proposals
- Cooperate with other research groups and partners
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, physics, or similar
- Building reliable and highly scalable applications
- Fluent in spoken and written English
Experience:
- Python, Java, Scala and/or C# programming skills
- Distributed computing and storage systems, eg. Spark, HBase
- Build tools (eg. Maven, sbt)
- Software development lifecycle management and setting up CI/CD pipelines (eg. Jenkins)
- Version control (eg. Git)
- Relational database systems (eg. PostgreSQL, Oracle or similar)
- SQL and database modelling
- Familiar with implementing RESTful APIs (eg. Java Spring Boot, .NET Core Web API)
Experience in one or more of the following items is also an advantage:
- Implementing and deploying Spark submit applications to production environments
- Using Kafka as hub for processing of data, eg. Kafka streams using Spark
- Set up containers and orchestration (eg. Kubernetes)
- Creating and deploying ML models (MLOps)
- Linux OS
- Scripting languages, eg. Bash shell or similar
- Environmental data and/or earth observation data

Most of our approximately 175 employees work at the main office in Kjeller, a short train ride from Oslo. We also have an office in Tromsø just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of town.
