We are looking for a highly talented scientist whose focus is on the development, analysis and applications of nanophotonics.
The successful candidate has a strong affinity with state-of-the-art experiments, and with a deep understanding of the observed
phenomena. The capability to develop collaborations with industry and other external partners is crucial. The candidate’s research
fits in the strategy of the Department of Science and Technology and the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. The candidate builds
a characteristic research line within the COPS chair, and the Applied Nanophotonics (ANP) network of the MESA+ Institute. The COPS
chair is well-known for its pioneering research on light propagation in complex media, including photonic band gaps, wavefront
shaping of light, adaptive quantum photonics, Anderson localization. COPS actively collaborates with leading industry on solid-state
lighting and quantum secure authentication applications. Within ANP, the neighboring chairs have strong programs on non-linear optics,
on-chip lasers, Raman sensors, waveguiding, biomedical optics.
We expect a strong track record of innovative research illustrated by publications in leading international journals, and the
ambition and potential to acquire external funding. The candidate is an independent researcher, committed to excellence, and
with excellent communication skills. A solid background is expected in Physics, Electrical Engineering or related fields,
preferably (but not necessarily) with experience in nanophotonics. The candidate will be involved in the teaching program
of the Applied Physics curriculum at the BSc and MSc levels, and is expected to enthusiastically supervise BSc and MSc
students in their scientific projects. The candidate is required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification ("BKO").
Conditions of employment
Your research will be accommodated by the COPS chair. You will be mentored by Professor Willem Vos, in close cooperation with
senior COPS staff Pepijn Pinkse and Ad Lagendijk. The COPS chair and the ANP network will strongly stimulate you to set up a
vigorous independent research program. All research facilities of the COPS chair, of the ANP network, as well as the state-of-the-art
MESA+ cleanroom are at your disposition.
The Tenure Track position is set for a maximum period of six years, and is in the end aimed to lead to a permanent staff position as
associate professor or adjunct professor. While the starting position is intended at assistant professor level, candidates with higher
qualifications are also invited to apply. It is the intention of the UT to provide an attractive start-up package, including a position
for a PhD student to be supervised by the candidate.
During your tenure track term your performance will be regularly evaluated. The goal of these meetings is to keep track of your progress,
to help optimize the development of your scientific and education goals. Criteria for progress include a strong track record of publications,
evaluation of teaching activities, and the record to acquire research funding and to achieve an international network and reputation.
Shortly after your start you will set up a plan, together with your mentors, that is aimed at the successful completion of your tenure track.
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO). Depending on relevant
background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full time basis ranges from 3,427 € to 5,330 € per month. Employees are
also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
