University Assistant (prae doc)
at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science
Reference number: 11481
TER, the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Group at the newly founded Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic PhD student interested to work in the area of soil or microbial lipidomics and/or metabolomics. The position involves the setup and establishment of lipidomics/metabolomics protocols, based on UPLC-high resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrao HRMS), to develop isotope tracer approaches allowing to study the metabolic activity of microbial communities and to trace carbon, nitrogen and oxygen fluxes into lipid biomarkers specific to key microbial groups. We expect excellent (practical) knowledge of analytical and molecular techniques in ecology.
Your responsibility will be to participate in research projects and to write a PhD thesis (including three first authored scientific papers). Additionally, it is expected that you assist in the supervision of students and in the maintenance of analytical instrumentation at the department. Teaching to the extent of the collective agreement provisions is required. We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within the first year of employment.

+ Expertise in the field of ecosystem science, microbiology, metabolomics or lipidomics
+ Profound knowledge in analytical chemistry (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry)
+ Knowledge of analytical and molecular methods in biology (e.g., stable isotope tracing methods, mass spectrometry).
+ Good written and oral communication skills
Ideal candidates should have a solid background in ecosystem research, preferably in the area of soil ecology, and in analytical chemistry, with a focus on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Applicants must have the ability to work in an international team, have good communication skills and should be highly motivated and committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research.
