Full Professorship (W3) / Hertz Chair for Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience
University of Bonn
The University of Bonn calls for applications for a
Hertz Chair for Artificial Intelligence and
(W3, full professorship)
starting as soon as possible.
Establishing Hertz Chairs at the interface of outstanding research
areas at the University of Bonn is a central measure following the
success of the University of Bonn within the German Excellence
Strategy, a funding program of the Federal Government and the
German States to support cutting-edge research at universities.
Within this measure, the University of Bonn will establish a Hertz
Chair on the topic of artificial intelligence and neuroscience within the
Transdisciplinary Research Area Life & Health.
Ideal candidates for a Hertz Chair will have a strong track record
at the interface of mathematics/computational sciences and the
neurosciences. Candidates who focus on the pure exploration of
mathematical models and their dynamics will not be considered.
We are looking for a candidate with outstanding scientific achievements
who is interested in participating in novel interdisciplinary teaching
programs at the interface between life sciences and mathematics.
The future chair holder will be expected to contribute to and shape
the evolution of a university-wide center for artificial intelligence in the
human context. As an outstanding scientific personality, the holder
of this Hertz Chair will have access to excellent resources.
The Hertz Chair will be integrated into a vibrant and active research
environment. It will be positioned at the interface between highly
visible and established research areas in Bonn. These include an
outstanding neuroscience community with a focus on circuit neuroscience
and behavior at the University of Bonn and at two extrauniversity
research institutes (Research Center caesar within the
Max Planck Society and the German Center for Neurodegenerative
Diseases within the Helmholtz Association), outstanding expertise
in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and
mathematics with a very strong university community, two Clusters of
Excellence (Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, PhenoRob – Robotics
and Phenotyping for Sustainable Crop Production), an extra-university
research center (Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and
Information Systems, IAIS) as well as outstanding research structures
in the area of human health, where the Faculty of Medicine, the
University Hospital Bonn and the ImmunoSensation2 Cluster of
Excellence have identified precision medicine utilizing AI systems
and ML as the key research area for the next decade.
Formal requirements are regulated by § 36 of the Higher Education
Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz des Landes
The University of Bonn is committed to diversity and equal opportunities.
