The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent
reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest
scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find
a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
The UFZ has obtained a prominent position within the field of near-natural water treatment technologies
such as constructed wetlands. The availability of various laboratory-and pilot-scale units at the UFZ fosters respective
research & development and enables to assess the feasibility of eco-technological treatment systems for future
application. The Department of Environmental Biotechnology is inviting applications for a
Scientist - Near-natural (waste) water treatment technologies (m/f)
to commence in January 2017, working time: 100% (39 hours per week), initially limited to 3 years (extension to permanent employment possible).
In light of the upcoming restructuring of municipal wastewater treatment processes and water cycles, ample career
opportunities exist for a young ambitious biotechnologist/environmental engineer, for example:
readjustment of wastewater treatment systems to provide more particulate matter of waste water to biogas reactors, conceptual planning for immobilised biomass systems as a consequence of reduced carbon load in activated sludge treatment
particle elimination to reduce effluent loads of microbial pathogens (sanitation), antibiotic resistant bacteria, and transport vehicles for organic micropollutants, incl. advanced oxidation processes and bioelectrical approaches
employing riparian strips adjacent to agricultural fields for attenuation of pesticide, nutrients, SOM and DOM emission into surface waters
knowledge transfer of treatment processes in and operation of constructed wetlands to urban improvements such as green roofs, green walls, vertical culturing, urban farming and gardening
You should be interested in developing your ideas and expertise in the field of technical use of microbial processes in order to
take over a respective working group and to gain qualification for academic tenure track positions (habilitation). A major task
will include the coordination of the activities with UFZ's Centre for Environmental Biotechnology (UBZ).
PhD in biotechnology, environmental engineering, or related field
Strong interest in complex ecological systems
Knowledge about the system rhiziosphere - water- soil/sediment
Experience in chemical and isotope analysis, and computational data management
Proven record of third-party funding
An open-minded, organized team player with excellent communication skills
Excellent written and spoken English skills (German would be of advantage)
Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
